In order to pick up a new job at the Centro de Biotecnología and Genómica de Plantas (UPM-INIA), a plant science center of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, I had to move my household and family from the Ruhr District in Germany to Madrid, Spain. A huge adventure given that I was not able to speak Spanish back then. By now, we life for more than 10 years in Navalcarnero, a village around 30 km southwest from Madrid. Navalcarnero is a very welcoming place, which is full of nice people. The village is far from being the classical dormitory town as so many others around, as it was founded as early as 1499 and has an old urban center.

Particularly during the Fiestas Patronales in September, Navalcarnero is full of life. There are plenty of activities for all ages, starting with the youngest and not forgetting the seniors.

Apart of the many qualities of this community, Navalcarnero is also embedded in a breathtaking rural landscape characterised by rolling hills, crop fields, and vineyards.
