Valencia

There are cities you visit once and enjoy, and then there’s Valencia, a place that somehow compels you to return more often. My first visit dates back to 2001. I arrived without expectations, intending only to visit my sister-in-law, who had moved there with her family a year earlier. At that time, I had no idea that this Mediterranean city would become a place I would revisit countless times over the years, each visit deepening my affection for it. From the moment I first walked through the futuristic curves of the Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias, I felt as if I had stepped into another world. Even now, when I return, the complex still fills me with the same sense of wonder. Its white structures, reflected in bright pools of turquoise water, seem like a glimpse of the future, frozen in the present. Nestled within this extraordinary setting are the Oceanogràfic and the Museo de las Ciencias Príncipe Felipe, two places that always draw me in. There’s something mesmerizing about watching the slow dance of marine life, the silent glide of sharks, the gentle sway of rays, and the glowing beauty of jellyfish. On the other hand, I enjoyed exploring the Science Museum with my kids when they were younger. Each visit leaves me reflecting on how vast and interconnected our planet truly is.

Valencia is much more than its modern landmarks. Take, for instance, the Barrio del Carmen, the vibrant heart of the city, which pulses with history and life. Its narrow streets wind like a story unfolding, with ancient walls, lively bars, colorful street art, and small cafés glowing in the evening light, all coming together in a way that feels spontaneous and endlessly inviting. I’ve spent countless evenings there, simply wandering, letting curiosity guide me, and somehow always finding myself in conversations with the people around me. Valencia’s coastline has a soul of its own, and places like El Perellonet and Cullera have become personal favorites. El Perellonet, with its peaceful beach and laid-back charm, is a place where time seems to soften. There’s a simplicity there, a long, quiet shoreline, warm sand between your toes, and a sea that whispers softly. Just a bit farther down the coast, Cullera offers a different kind of energy, crowned by its castle overlooking the bay. I’ve spent many sunny afternoons there, watching families play by the water, surfers catching waves, and people sharing laughter along the promenade. Cullera feels alive yet grounded, a balance uniquely its own.
Port Saplaya, Valencia’s “Little Venice,” is equally unforgettable. Its vibrant houses line tranquil canals where boats gently sway in the breeze, creating the impression of a lively postcard come to life. It’s an ideal spot for leisurely strolls, allowing one to soak in the colors, reflections, and the warm Mediterranean air. Each visit feels like discovering a charming, secret corner of the coastline, reserved for those who take the time to explore.

As much as I love these places, what truly ties everything together and makes Valencia more than just a city on a map are the friendships I’ve formed and the bonds with my family. Over the years, I’ve met people from all over the world, including many who live in Valencia and take pride in sharing their traditions. These relationships have enriched each visit, shaping my experiences in ways I couldn’t have imagined back in the early 2000s. They’ve allowed me to see Valencia not just through my own eyes, but through the perspectives of locals, which has made all the difference.
Looking back, I realize that Valencia is one of those rare places that continues to grow with you. Every visit uncovers something new, a new street, a new view, a new moment of connection. It is a city of contrasts and harmony, of modern lines and ancient stones, of peaceful lagoons and lively plazas, of long lasting friendships and new beginnings. And perhaps that’s why I always find my way back. Valencia isn’t just a destination for me anymore. It’s a part of my story, and I carry it with me.
